What does #AKOPTH mean?

Adult Kid Of Parents That Hoard

This #hashtag #AKOPTH was developed because I referred to myself as a “kid” often in my younger years.

Truly an “ode” to the goats that we had when growing up. My brother got a brown one named Millie and mine was a black one named Amy and baby goats are referred to as “kids.”

I needed a way to differentiate myself from the “child” aspect in the other #hashtag commonly used which is #ACOH or Adult Children of Hoarders. I wanted to get away from the word “hoarder” in my reference to my own parents and eventually clients.

However, I have no issue with the word hoard or hoarding, as for me that refers to a situation and a behavior respectively.

It is important to define, discuss and share with people the challenges of having parents that hoard. It is an additional burden to have as our parents age.

Societal expectation that we can/will/have the power/authority to “fix”/help/honor our parents is a heavy weight placed around our necks.

It’s time for the #AKOPTH to be recognized as an important and valuable part of the conversation about hoarding. Our perspective is needed to create long term solutions.

Please reach out if you are struggling with people in your life that hoard. There are people who understand and are willing to step into the gap.
