Why Do We Ignore Hoarding When We See It?

Frequently we may notice something out of the ordinary, but when it comes to our loved ones we tend to ignore hoarding. We don’t say anything as we don’t want to offend the person or cause a rift in the relationship.

This initial response is understandable, as we may not want to rock the boat or make the person angry.

Silence and saying nothing however, does NOT solve the problem.

Don\’t Ignore Hoarding

Hoarding issues can escalate quickly and letting it slide for one more month or until the next visit can allow the problem to fester and explode.

When you notice a friend, family member or tenant struggling with a hoarding issue, that is the time to begin working toward a solution.

-Don\’t wait until they are two days away from their annual inspection.

-Don\’t wait until they fail their inspection.

-Don\’t wait until \”next year\” as surely they will resolve it within that time period!

If you see someone struggling with clutter or not taking their trash out, know that it is likely a problem they cannot resolve on their own.

If the essence of their apartment is lingering in the hall and neighbors are complaining, take them seriously.

Most folks that hoard don\’t \”see\” the problem, otherwise known as \”clutter blindness.\”

Or they may know there is a problem, but are too afraid to admit they need help for fear of losing their housing.

IF you see a problem, begin to take action. The problem won\’t solve itself.
